About the Event

About Escape from Alcatraz

Escape from Alcatraz is San Francisco’s cult‑classic triathlon that turns the city’s waterfront into an arena for grit, navigation, and hills—starting with a leap from a ferry beside “The Rock.” Starting and finishing at Marina Green by the St. Francis Yacht Club, this point‑to‑point challenge marries cold Bay water, punchy Presidio climbs, and coastal sand into a race that’s as scenic as it is unforgiving.

What to Expect

This is a made‑in‑San‑Francisco format, not a standard Olympic or half‑distance. Athletes jump en masse from a ferry near Alcatraz Island and tackle an approximately 1.5‑mile open‑water swim across swift, lateral currents toward Crissy Field/Marina Green. Transition sits along Marina Green before an 18‑mile bike through the Presidio and along the Pacific bluffs—short, steep rises, technical turns, rough patches, and crosswinds are all in play. The 8‑mile run strings together coastal trail, stair sets, and beach sand to Baker Beach, where the infamous Sand Ladder delivers a heart‑pounding, calf‑searing ascent before the fast return to a roaring Marina Green finish.

Who It’s For

Best suited to experienced triathletes and proficient open‑water swimmers who are comfortable with 55–60°F water, sighting across current, and handling bikes on rolling, technical roads. The field commonly features elite pros and competitive age‑groupers; individual and relay/team divisions are offered in many years. Entry is highly sought‑after and may involve a lottery, qualification, or charity slots—confirm the current pathway and division details on the official site.

Key Highlights

Practical Tips

Dress for the Bay: A snug full‑sleeve wetsuit, double cap, and earplugs help with cold shock; bring both clear and tinted goggles for fog or glare. Master sighting: Attend the athlete briefing, note tide direction, and pre‑plan sight lines to fixed landmarks. Train specifically: Short hill repeats, stair work, and sand running mimic race demands; practice flying mounts/dismounts for tight transitions. Dial logistics: Arrive early—parking around Marina Green is limited; use rideshare or transit and pack warm layers for wind. Know the course: Routes and timelines can change year to year—review the latest maps, cutoff times, and division rules on the official website before race day.
