Palace of Fine Arts. The Palace of Fine Arts was unveiled at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in 1915. The grand event celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and the resurrection of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The Palace of Fine Arts today encompasses a large lagoon where you can sit and have a picnic on the grass and also houses the Exploratorium museum and a theater for performing arts. St. Francis Yacht Club. St. Francis Yacht Club was founded in 1927 and today boasts a membership of more than 2,300 boating enthusiasts. The Yacht Club hosts over 40 regattas each year and was the host site of the 2000 Olympic sailing trials. Crissy Fields. Situated along the bay front walkway, Crissy Fields is a restored wetland that is enjoyed today for dog walking, bird watching, jogging, biking, kite surfing, world renown windsurfing or strolling the beach. Walk along the beach to Fort Point under the Golden Gate Bridge and stop on the way at the Warming Hut to grab a cup of cocoa, a latte or a sandwich. Presidio. From 1776 to 1994, the Presidio served as a military outpost for the Spanish, Mexican, and United States armies. Today, the Presidio is a historical preserve open to the public that houses numerous non-profit organizations and is home to Lucas Films newly built Digital Arts campus. Fort Mason. Fort Mason, located on the waterfront between Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, is best known as the San Francisco Port of Embarkation headquarters from 1910 to 1963. During WWII, 1.6 million troops and 23 million tons of cargo were transported through Fort Mason. Today, visitors can dine at bay front tables at the well loved Greens Restaurant or attend one of the many events open to the public at the Herbst Pavillon. Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf is among the most popular San Francisco attractions. Browse the souvenir shops at Pier 39, visit Ghirardelli Square for delicious ice cream smothered in Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, catch a ferry to Sausalito or Alcatraz or enjoy attractions at the Wax Museum and Aquarium of the Bay. Cables Cars. Cable cars are synonymous with San Francisco. Cable cars are a fun and efficient way to travel from Union Square to Fisherman’s Wharf. Rides are $3 per person, each way. De Young Museum. The de Young Museum is located in Golden Gate Park and reopened in 2005 after an extensive renovation. The museum originally opened in 1895. Muir Woods. Muir Woods is located 14 miles north of San Francisco.
